How to Stop a Dog From Digging ?

Dogs dig. It’s in their nature. They love to find things and they’re naturally curious about what might be buried down there under the ground. But not all pet owners like it when their dog digs up the yard, garden or flower beds. So how can you stop your dog from digging?

There are a few different methods for discouraging digging, but most of them involve taking away something that your dog really likes: food, water or attention. If you have enough time and patience, this is probably the best way to get rid of an unwanted behavior because it gives you a chance to teach your dog some better habits while he figures out what he does want instead of just punishing him for bad behavior without any explanation.

If you don’t have the time to be constantly supervising your dog while he’s outside, try moving his food and water bowls away from the area where he digs. Or you can put a dirty old blanket or sheet over that part of the yard so that it doesn’t look like a place where anything good will happen. Dogs tend to avoid things that smell musty or “old,” so this is a great way to make your flower beds less attractive to them.

The third alternative is probably going to be harder for most people because it requires giving up something you really love: attention from your dog. When he digs in an area, take him away from it and ignore him completely until he stops digging. When it’s clear that he is no longer digging, give him plenty of attention and playtime in another area. Some dogs will stop digging when they get bored with the activity; others may need to be distracted by something else before they decide to quit.

Keep in mind that for this method to work, you have to be completely consistent about ignoring your dog when he digs. If you give in just once, he’ll know that his behavior has an effect on you and will try even harder to get your attention next time around.
